On Saturday mornings I sit outside and visit with the desperate housewives, our husbands mow the lawn in their khaki pants and polo shirts and the kids play from one yard to the next.
Life is good. life is the same. life is some sick TV series from the 1950's.
Except that I don't wear dresses and I have birds taking refuge in my hair most days.
OH. and I have a wife not a husband. and we are gay.
This is role playing to me. This is what people see.
Smiles and manicured lawns. Is this what we are striving for ?
Isn't this what it's all about ? Baseball games and ice cream trucks. Camping trips and casseroles.
Suburbia land. 2.5 and a minivan.
We will never be fully accepted by these drive by wavers and their kids will probably not be allowed to sleep over at our house.
Behind closed doors they feel sorry for our children and worry about how to explain two mommies to theirs.
I want my children to feel accepted and normal. I want them to be proud and know how much they are loved and how much effort was put in to bringing them in to this world.
I have a wife and my kids have 2 moms.
How comforting that we can live this life today. We can play the role and be out and proud to God, our neighbors and the holy ghost.
In the 1950's women were hiding their sexuality.....they would marry men and have kids and smile and wave and wear dresses and make dinner and talk and would be living a lie and miserable...and popping antidepresents and alcohol.
I am so happy that I am able to have children...through the expertise of doctors and the generosity of a very nice anonymous man...and one day hope to legally marry my wife.
We have a long way to go. We have a long road ahead of us. Not just as another gay family, but as mothers of TEENAGERS !!!! I am excited and looking forward to every challenge. (maybe not EVERY challenge)
And every day that I become more and more like my mother I will smile and pat my children on their heads and wash down a xanax with my mid morning mimosa.
Because I can.
Hopefully this road will be smoother for the next generation. Less bumps and detour signs. The laws will be equal for everyone. even our neighbors 6 year old gay son.
Hopefully I will have had something to do with that.
