In fulfilling my end of the deal I began praying with Syd when she was 2 years old.
I never liked scripted prayers and didn't want to teach her to ask for stuff either.
She was too little to come up with a prayer on her own so I improvised. I would ask her what she loved and then I would say...lets say thanks for it.
So our prayers went something like this :
Me, "thank you for my bed"
Syd, "thank you for my bed"
Me, "thank you for my bear"
Syd, "thank you for my bear"
etc. and so on.
Shortly after we started saying prayers she made up her own little version that went something like this :
Me, "thank you for my bed"
Syd, "thank you for my donk-dee-dah"
Me, "Syd, be respectful (because I was always told that) thank you for my bear"
Syd giggling, "thank you for my tong-tu-sah" giggling and now flipping over on her back and rolling back and forth with her hands over her head.
etc. and so on.
After this went on for a few nights I decided prayer time was over. It is not something I think should be forced and certainly not something she was ready for :)
Fast forward a couple of years. Both mine and J's families are active members of their church. It is customary as with a lot of religions to pray over meals. We have always respected this whether it be at our house or theirs. (sometimes when I steal food before we sit down I will say, yip..I'm gonna die now..this food wasn't prayed for)
Syd started praying over the food, I think because she liked the attention. Standard prayers go something like this, "Dear heavenly father, thank you for this day, thank you for this food, please bless it, in the name of jesus christ amen."
Syd's prayers go like this :
(prophetic dialect)"Dear heavenly father. Thank you for this princess rainbow day. Thank you for our love in our hearts. Thank you for our families. Tell them we love them. Tell them to have a wonderful day. Tell us what we are thankful for. Show us our love in our hearts. We are kind and soft to everyone. We love everyone. Tell everyone to be safe. in the name of jesus christ amen"
Honestly. Sometimes it goes even longer.
She went to church with grandma on Sunday and said the prayer in her primary class. :) ha ha APPARENTLY it was a hit.
I may not have done it directly, but inadvertently I somewhat kept my promise to God.
